Obituary of Raymond Thoms
Raymond L. Thoms, 91, of Amherst, died Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Elmcroft of Lorain after a lengthy illness.
He was born November 19, 1927 in Dearing, KS, and had been a Amherst resident for the past 3 years moving from Vermilion where he had spent most of his life.
Ray graduated from Brownhelm School in 1946 and worked for Lake Terminal Railroad as a conductor for 20 years.
He had attended the United Church of Christ Congregational and Grace United Methodist in Vermilion. He also was a past member of the Vermilion Lions Club where he had been very active and marched in 13 international parades. He had been an active volunteer at Lorain Community Hospital, Lucy Idol, American Heart Association, and Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed dancing, traveling internationally, boating, buying and selling antiques, and building and remodeling houses.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kay (nee Rehder) Thoms of Lorain; daughter, Nancy (Bill) Hamilton of Amherst; son, Robert Thoms of WA; grandchildren, Julie Hunady, Marc Hamilton, and Nicolette Elommal; 8 great grandchildren; and his former wife and friend, Ellen Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Florence (nee Smith) Thoms; brother, Calvin Thoms; and his sister, Katherine.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 26, 2018, from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Reverend Allison LeBrun will officiate. Interment will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery,Vermilion.
